What is the purpose of the A-V Impulse System®* foot pump? To mimic ambulation. Clinical studies report that a plexus of veins in the foot acts as a powerful venous pump in the weightbearing phase of normal ambulation. As each step is taken, the application of weight to the bottom of the foot results in longitudinal flattening and stretching of the plantar arch, causing the venous plantar plexus to collpase and empty. This ejection of blood is so powerful that it is able to overcome a calf cuff inflated to the heart. But when patients are immobile, this circulatory action ceases.
